The lack of adequate sanitation and hygiene facilities has affected the health of students and teachers at schools in Bilaa, a community in western Ethiopia, to such an extent that normal learning and teaching practices are disrupted. This results in a significant number of school dropouts. The lack of hand-washing sinks increases the spread of disease. Teacher and student awareness of sanitation and hygiene is very low and is not currently supported by training activities.

As the first project with the new funding partner WasserStiftung, the Wilo-Foundation is helping to improve the learning and living situation of the approximately 10,000 inhabitants of the Bilaa community by 2023 through the project "Good Hygiene - Better Health". The object of the funding is the construction of hygienic sanitary facilities as well as the construction of hand washing facilities in order to be able to practice appropriate hand hygiene. The project is being implemented and monitored by the WasserStiftung together with the Ethiopian organization Environmentalists Development Association Ethiopia (EDA-E). The founder Fekadu Aleka of EDA-E was visited by the Wilo Country Manager of Ethiopia, Tariku Amare, in March 2021, who was impressed that the organization has already implemented numerous environmental and water projects and what ideas about future projects are in development.
