Jordan: Energy Globe Award for wastewater project

Environmental award for the Global Nature Fund / funding project of the Wilo-Foundation.

Global Nature Fund (GNF) and EcoPeace Jordan have received the Energy Globe Award 2022 for the Tal al Mantah treatment plant in the Jordan Valley. Together with its partner organisation on the ground, EcoPeace Middle East, GNF equipped the existing wastewater treatment plant in the Jordan Valley with a photovoltaic system and constructed a constructed wetland in the Jordan EcoPark (for further information, click here). The pilot project (2018-2021) was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and private sponsors, including the Wilo-Foundation.

“The project makes a significant contribution to reducing water scarcity in this conflict-ridden region and we are very pleased that this important initiative has been recognised by this prestigious award,” says Udo Gattenlöhner, GNF Executive Director. The Energy Globe Award was established in 1999 in Austria and is aimed at raising public awareness of innovative and sustainable projects from all over the world.

“We congratulate GNF and its partner organisation EcoPeace MiddleEast on this remarkable award,” explains Evi Hoch, member of the Executive Board of the Wilo-Foundation. “Overall, 130,000 people living in the surrounding areas will benefit from the pilot project either directly or indirectly. When I visited the project in 2019 I had an opportunity to see for myself how successfully GNF is working with its local partner EcoPeace Middle East and what progress has been made through the project.”

The project in Jordan is one of several GNF projects that are supported by the Wilo-Foundation. After previous funding projects in Colombia (drinking water treatment) and Cambodia (drinking water for a floating village), the foundation is currently providing funding for a reforestation project in the Western Ghats in India, near Pune. In addition, the Wilo-Foundation is supporting the activities of the Living Lakes Network that works to protect lakes. Here, Global Nature Fund coordinates the collaboration between environmental and nature conservation organisations on the partner lakes.
