In order that life in the crisis region can go on more or less normally, children can go to school and basic health care is guaranteed, arche noVa and the local partner New Way created the conditions with numerous other partners. For example for regular school lessons: arche noVa rehabilitated school toilets, repaired water pipes and drinking water treatment plants also in kindergartens, hospitals and rural health stations.
Now, the construction of sanitary facilities (toilets, hand wash basins) including septic tanks and drainage fields in five schools, kindergartens and seven health centers in eastern Ukraine is planned for the next few years. As connection to a central sewage system is often only possible to a limited extent in rural areas, decentralized, local systems with septic tanks and drainage fields will be installed. The sanitary facilities are built to be age-, gender- and inclusion-appropriate. For example, kindergartens have smaller toilet seats and lower washbasins than elementary and middle schools.
To ensure the sustainability of the measures and also to increase the ownership principle of the individual facilities and communities towards the project, both the technical staff of the educational and health facilities in the maintenance of the sanitation facilities and the technical staff of the local government utilities will receive training on the maintenance and operation of the new facilities. Such an approach, with the involvement of the target group in the project implementation process at all its stages, will ensure the sustainability of the project's impact.
The funding partner: arche noVa - Initiative für Menschen in Not e.V., Dresden, supports people who are in need through no fault of their own due to crises, conflicts and natural disasters. The focus of their work is on projects in the field of WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene), i.e. sustainable access to clean drinking water, improvement of sanitation and prevention programs in the field of hygiene.
