Efficient wastewater treatment plant with sustainable impact

The Tal-Al-Mantah wastewater treatment plant is the first solar-powered plant in this sunny region and thus a flagship project for local communities and for officials and decision-makers in local and regional water authorities.

Funding period: 2018-2021

Our funding project in Jordan was aimed at stabilising the treatment capacity of the Tal-Al-Mantah wastewater treatment plant, and at ensuring in this way that sufficient purified water was available for irrigation of agricultural land in the Jordan Valley. This pilot wastewater and solar power project saw the first solar-powered treatment plant established in the region and greatly improved the hygiene and sanitation situation in the Jordan Valley with a population of 130,000.

The Global Nature Fund - Internationale Stiftung für Umwelt und Natur (GNF), Radolfzell, and EcoPeace Jordan were awarded the Energy Globe Award 2022 for Jordan for this wastewater treatment plant project in the Jordan Valley.

The project supported by the Wilo-Foundation and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) also included the construction of wetlands in the nearby visitor centre of Sharhabil Bin Hassneh (SHE) EcoPark. These wetlands purify the wastewater produced by the park and the visitor centre. In 2016 and 2017, SHE EcoPark was nominated as one of the top 100 Green Destinations.
