In Laikipia County in Kenya, more than half of the households have no or only inadequate access to clean water and sanitation.

The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) project in Laikipia County, a semi-arid region north of Nairobi, Kenya, was part of a long-term program that supported the most vulnerable members of society with challenges of adequate housing, hygiene and sanitation, as well as knowledge of land and inheritance rights. The main goals of the project were to improve access to the water supply with clean drinking water for about 600 community members of Kariunga Village. For this reason, the Wilo-Foundation supported the water project of Habitat for Humanity Germany in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity Kenya in Laikipia County.

The project activities significantly improved the daily lives of the local population as women and their children no longer have to walk many miles to reach the nearest water point and fetch water for their families. Moreover, selected community members have received technical training. In the future, they will be part of “water committees” who will be responsible for installing and maintaining the water pumps of the new water and sanitation systems.
