Community Music - for all!

Community music is all about making music together. The idea is to give all people, regardless of their musical talent or skills, their age, sex, physical condition or other characteristics, access to music and creative work and foster participation in cultural and social activities in Dortmund.

Funding period: 2019-2027

In September 2019, the Konzerthaus Dortmund was the first German concert hall to launch a Community Music programme (website). Under the motto “Community Music – Music for everyone to join in” the Konzerthaus Dortmund is increasingly including its immediate surroundings in its education programme. The free events target day care centres, schools, families, musicians, adults, senior citizens and many more. Participants interact with each other as equals, using music as a tool for personal empowerment and for further developing their personal and artistic talent.

Some of the activities take place in the Konzerthaus or are integrated in concert series such as "Neuland" or "International Orchestra”. Events are also being organised in the city centre, in youth centres, social institutions and on the streets and squares of the Brückviertel district in the immediate vicinity of the Konzerthaus. There are also many other training formats offered locally, in addition to the Community Music programme. These formats give people an opportunity to delve deeper into the subject, one example being the first certificate course “Community Music” that is being implemented in collaboration with other institutions in this field. The course provides comprehensive practical and theoretical training for future Community Musicians.
