mondo digitalis – coding is as easy as pie

One of the outcomes of a digital learning project in the Dortmund-based children’s museum mondo mio! was the organisation of five study trips that allowed children and youth to gain coding experience through games and play.

In 2021, the children’s museum mondo mio! in Dortmund developed a fascinating, intaractive digital project called "mondo digitalis", a multi-faceted format promoting creativity, digital skills and environmental knowledge of children and youth.

"mondo digitalis" was a unique combination of digital know-how, information on sustainable lifestyles, fun, excitement and creative experiments. The concept was developed jointly with the Dortmund-based group Selfiegrafen, a collective of education practitioners and artists. The project was all about gathering experience, conducting experiments and learning with a practical focus instead of acquiring theoretical knowledge. That is why "mondo digitalis" and its digital labs (modis) went to kindergartens, schools and leisure facilities. Two trained "mondo digitalis" coaches supported each learning group as mentors.

The outcomes of the project, achieved with support from the Wilo-Foundation (here: as a trustee of the WILO-Stiftung), included five learning journeys for children and young people of different ages that combined digital know-how, information on sustainable lifestyles, fun, excitement and creativity. "mondo digitalis", the interactive digital project on sustainability, could be experienced at the children's museum mondo mio! from October 2021 to February 2022 and was open to the public. The exhibition showed the results of the test groups, offered inspiration for daycare centres and schools in designing their own projects and curricula, and also provided information on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
