The “schools in the digital world” programme is sponsored by the Essen-based Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities) and was initiated jointly with the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation. Its aim is to support schools as they transition into a digital world and to actively support their further development.
This is especially important since the drafting of concepts for media use in class, learning with media and school design is a mandatory element of school development and a key task of school management. For developing and implementing such concepts, school management and teaching staff need not only comprehensive media education and teaching skills and practical experience in using digital media but also knowledge in the areas of organisational development and change management. Another important aim was to ensure that as many members of the school community as possible are included in the transformation processes. This also meant getting pupils involved by giving them an opportunity to actively shape their digital learning environment. Moreover, each school was linked up with a partner from the field of university teacher training at the start of the project, with a view to fostering a lively exchange between classroom teachers and those who work in teacher training.
